Val di Non, Trentino: der Tovelsee, Urlaub im Nonstal in den Brenta-Dolomiten

Tovel Lake

The Val di Non is among the Trentino region areas with the most watercourses and beautiful lakes. The streams that wind through its territory and make up its features with deep overhanging canyons and narrow gorges gently give way to placid waters that adorn the landscape. Some of them are “jewels” of nature studded in extraordinary settings, like Lake Tovel, surrounded by the Adamello Brenta Nature Park; others, like Lake Santa Giustina give considerable evidence of the locals’ respect for their environment.

Bathing is permitted in lake Smeraldo in Fondo, lake Santa Maria in Tret, the little lakes of Coredo and Tavon and many more. Many are also the sports you can practice on or in the lakes of the Val di Non: fishing, canoeing and rafting are some of the experiences not to be missed in the waters of Lake Santa Giustina and its affluent, the stream Noce.

Lake Tovel

Set in the northern part of the Brenta Group, Lake Tovel (m. 1,178) is the largest natural lake in Trentino and one the “jewels” the Adamello – Brenta Nature Park can boast. Its waters are surprisingly clear, with incredible blue and green shades. The lake also plays host to a variety of life-forms. It is part of the Noce catchment area, one of the main affluents of River Adige. The lake has a surface of 360,000 m2 with a maximum depth of 39 m.

Tuenno, along the provincial road n. 73, is the village that connects the Val di Non with the Tovel valley and the Adamello Brenta Nature Park. Once in Tuenno take the provincial road n. 14 of Val di Tovel that runs along the Rio Tresenga stream.
In the summer months visitors can reach the lake by shuttle-bus; shuttles leave from Cles, Tuenno and the “Capriolo” parking area.

PLEASE NOTICE that during the winter months the road to lake Tovel is closed to vehicular traffic.

Until the 1960’s Lake Tovel was famous both in Italy and throughout Europe due to a unique natural phenomenon that used to tinge red its waters every summer. Unfortunately this scenic reddening died down, but the legend of the red lake never ceases to fascinate.

On the banks of Lake Tovel stands one of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park Houses, i.e. a visitor information centre. Set up in conjunction with the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali (Trentino Museum of Natural Sciences), it is dedicated to the brown bear, the mascot of the park. Intended as the first approach for visitors to the park, the centre offers a photo and video exhibition, educational material, realistic reconstructions complete with smells, sounds and naturalized animals, interactive activities and books.

"Centro Visitatori del Parco" - tel. +39 0463-451033. Open in summer only.
