Val di Non in Trentino, in the heart of Brenta Dolomites and Maddalene: Make it a mountain holiday!

In Val di Non, a vast fruit orchard in the heart of north-western Trentino, hospitality means visitors’ friendly holiday offers. Stays in close contact with nature surrounded by varied and beautiful landscapes with plenty of choice of sports and leisure activities. The Brenta Dolomites and the beautiful Maddalene mountains offer plenty of holiday diversity. This green and sunny plateau has many scenic mountain destinations and hamlets where traces of ancient history and culture are preserved. Go on a hiking or biking tour to discover the majestic summits and beautiful italian lakes: holidays in summer and winter, hiking, biking and exploring the beautiful nature on snowshoes, the famous “ciaspolade” in Val di Non.
The valley centre of Val di Non is taken by the artificial lake of Santa Giustina surrounded by green hills with castles immersed in fruit orchard and forests: ancient and fascinating mansions that are definitely worth a visit. The most imposing is perhaps Castel Thun, near the village of Ton, at the entrance of the valley. Castel Thun will reopen to visitors in April 2010, after undergoing considerable renovation. Anticipation is feverish. Along with the famous Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento Castel Thun is going to be one of the most prestigious cultural and museum centres in the whole Alpine region (For information: tel. +39 0461-657816).
Higher mountains like the rocky Brenta Dolomites and the Maddalene range - which often remain snow-capped for months - encircle the gentle hills of the Val di Non, the perfect destination for your mountain holiday! On the south in the heart of the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park (www.pnab.it), Lake Tovel stands out like a natural jewel; this realm of the brown bear and many other animals was also known as the “Red Lake” due to the peculiar natural phenomenon that tinged its water red. The lake is the ideal starting point for hiking and biking tours and all visitors who enjoy nature, including experienced mountaineers who can reach higher challenging climbs starting from the shores of Lake Tovel, one of the most beautiful italian lakes. Here holiday visitors can also visit the park info centre - “Centro Visitatori del Parco” - (tel. +39 0463-451033. Open in summer only), where they’ll find plenty of useful and interesting info about the lake and the brown bear. To reach Lake Tovel from Cles drive along the provincial road n. 73, and at the junction in Tuenno proceed on the provincial road n. 14. During the summer months only shuttle-buses can drive to the lake. The Adamello Brenta Nature Park and the imposing Brenta are the ideal destination for both trekking and mountain-bike enthusiasts. In fact, the Dolomiti di Brenta Bike trail - a ring-shaped itinerary for bikers running around the mountains for 171 Km - was opened in the summer 2008; summer 2009 was the opening date of the Dolomiti di Brenta Trek, designed for hikers who enjoy stopovers in Alpine pasture dairies and refuges (www.dolomitibrentabike.it).
Canyons are the special attraction of the Val di Non. Dug in the rocks in the past millennia by the rivers that cross the valley, canyons can be explored along many trails (visit www.visitvaldinon.it for details). The Rio Sass Canyon in Fondo (info and booking: Cooperativa Smeraldo tel. +39 0463-850000 www.canyonriosass.it) and the Novella River Park, set among the villages of Dambel, Cloz and Romallo (info: Azienda Per il Turismo Val di Non Tourist Board tel. +39 0463-830133 www.parcofluvialenovella.it) are doubtlessly the most spectacular in the valley.
Speaking of the most scenic trails in the rocks, the path from the Rhaetian Museum in Sanzeno to the famous Saint Romedius Sanctuary is also worth mentioning. As one of the most extraordinary shrines in Europe, this place of pure spirituality is perched on a cliff overlooking the stream Rio S. Romedio. The Sanctuary that is open to visitors every day, can also be reached by car starting from the old town centre of Sanzeno (guided tours are organized from May to October. Info: Azienda Per il Turismo Val di Non Tourist Board tel. +39 0463-830133 www.visitvaldinon.it).
At the starting point of the trail to the Sanctuary of Saint Romedius you will also find the Rhaetian Museum, that illustrates the history of the Val di Non from prehistoric to late medieval times (info: Museo Retico. Centro per l’archeologia e la storia antica della Valle di Non / Rhaetian Museum. Centre for archaeology and ancient history of the Val di Non tel. +39 0463-434125 www.visitvaldinon.it).
There are many walks, hiking and biking trails in the Val di Non. Suitable for all ages and types of difficulty, the trail are very enjoyable all year and not only in summer: winter, for instance, is the perfect time to go walking on the snow with snowshoes, called “ciaspole” in the valley dialect. Indeed, in the Valle di Non snowshoes have become the symbol of winter, especially thanks to the famous Ciaspolada in Val di Non. Snowshoes are a must at this yearly challenge for professionals and amateurs in the snow-covered upper valley organised at Epiphany time. (Info: Società Podistica Novella sports club tel. +39 0463-830535; www.ciaspolada.it). Winter enthusiasts can freely choose among down-hill and cross-country skiing, or try their feet at daredevil snowboard descents. As a ski resort the Val di Non is particularly suited for families with children and first-time skiers. As a matter of fact the easy and not-too-crowded runs are an excellent test-bed for visitors cautiously venturing into ski for the first time. The Val di Non accordingly joined the “Primi Passi sulla Neve” (first steps on the snow) itinerary, designed specifically for families and beginners (www.visittrentino.it/primipassisullaneve)
Indoor and outdoor ice-skating - in rinks or on frozen lakes – round off the winter activities, with ski touring being the last but not least you can enjoy in the area, particularly on the beautiful snowy peaks of the Maddalene range where time seems to stand still.
The 38 hamlets and villages of the Val di Non offer many additional recreation and sports facilities such as playgrounds, tennis courts, football pitches and three riding schools surrounded by greenery. Especially worth mentioning is the Dolomiti Golf Club in Sarnonico: A wonderful 18-championship-holes course circled by a breath-taking natural scenery, it ranks among the most spectacular and technical courses of the whole Alpine region (www.dolomitigolf.it)
Enthusiast “gastronauts”, modern-day gourmands looking for simple and genuine tastes are invited to enjoy the “Strada della Mela e dei Sapori delle Valli di Non e di Sole” (Road of Apples and Flavours in the Val di Non and Val di Sole valleys - Tel. +39 0463-601647; www.stradedelvinodeltrentino.it). A challenging project of recovery and valorisation of typical or traditional products, the road of apples and flavours was also designed to integrate the rich and varied offer of agricultural produce, food & wine, hospitality, landscape, history, culture, arts and crafts under one all-embracing itinerary. Among the Val di Non delicacies the following certainly stand out for their traditional homey but genuine origin and taste: sausages and mortandela (seasoned pork meat roll), high mountain cheese like Trentingrana (www.trentingrana.it), potatoes, the main ingredient of the superb tortiei da patate (shallow-fried potato pancakes), and the grapes for the Groppello wine. Still, the undisputed “queen” of the Val di Non produce remains the apple: juicy and delicious in all its assorted varieties (Golden delicious, Red delicious, Renetta…), apples are also the main ingredient of appetizing desserts and cakes like strudel. Thanks to the internationally recognised Melinda trademark some years ago the apples of the Val di Non were awarded the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label which ensures the high quality of the product. To discover the world of the Val di Non apples visit MondoMelinda (in Segno di Taio, tel. +39 0463-469299; www.melinda.it). You may also take part in the “Adotta un Melo” (adopt an apple tree) initiative: in spring you “adopt” an apple tree of a certain local farmstead and you go pick the apples in autumn. In the Val di Non autumn is the season to feast on delicacies, with plenty of events where you can taste the local products. Try the apple harvest festival “Pomaria” in mid-October, one of the most renowned events in the valley, or “Gli Antichi Sapori della Val di Non” (Ancient flavours of the Val di Non), a culinary event held between October and November where visitors can try different menus and rediscover homey rural cuisine.
Val di Non hospitality means plenty of accommodation choice: hotels are generally intimate and family-run. Visitors can therefore strike up friendly relations with their helpful, guest-oriented hotel owners. Among the valley highlights is the offer of farm holidays (agritourism). With guesthouses or ancient manors surrounded by apple orchards or located at the foot of the mountains visitors of the Val di Non can rest assured they’ll enjoy a holiday immersed in nature and deep connection with the local rural soul. Accommodation facilities include garnì, boarding houses and labelled-quality residences, as well as a luxury campsite with fully-furnished chalets. It is worth a final note to mention that the Val di Non is currently focusing on wellness & spa. The number of hotels now offering state-of-the-art wellness centres along with quality restoration is on the increase. You’ll find expert wellness staff devoted to make you enjoy a pleasant relaxing time.
